New Delhi (National Times): As of 3 PM on Wednesday, voter turnout in the Delhi assembly elections reached 46.55%, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI).
The North-East district led with the highest turnout at 52.73%, while the New Delhi district recorded the lowest at 43.10%, closely followed by the Central district at 43.45%.
Other district turnout figures include:
- South West: 48.32%
- East: 47.09%
- North: 46.31%
- North West: 46.81%
- Shahdara: 49.58%
- South: 44.89%
- South East: 43.91%
- West: 45.06%
In addition to the Delhi assembly elections, the Milkipur constituency in Uttar Pradesh reported a turnout of 57.13%, and Erode (East) in Tamil Nadu saw a turnout of 53.63% in their respective bypolls.
Polling for the 70 assembly seats in Delhi, along with by-elections for one seat each in Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh, commenced at 7 AM and will continue until 6 PM, under tight security measures.
In a related development, the District Election Office (DEO) for North Delhi has dismissed allegations of voter coercion at the Sainik Vihar polling station in Shakur Basti. These claims suggested that a police officer pressured a voter to support a specific political party.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, the DEO clarified: “This refers to a complaint received on February 5, 2025, at 12:33 PM, alleging police personnel at Sainik Vihar forced a voter to vote for a particular party. Upon receiving the complaint, the Flying Squad was dispatched to investigate.”
The inquiry found that voters were able to cast their ballots freely, without external influence. The controversy arose after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) shared a video on X, alleging that the Delhi police were “hijacking the election.”
Vote counting is scheduled for February 8.
