Election Campaigning Banned 48 Hours Before Delhi Assembly Polls

New Delhi (National Times): The Chief Electoral Office (CEO) of Delhi has issued strict guidelines to political parties, restricting election-related activities during the 48 hours leading up to the conclusion of polling for the Delhi Legislative Assembly elections.

The directive, signed by CEO R Alice Vaz, was shared with all recognized national and state political parties to ensure compliance with the Model Code of Conduct. The official notice, published on February 1, 2025, in major Hindi, English, Punjabi, and Urdu newspapers, outlines prohibited activities for political leaders, star campaigners, and candidates during this period.

Restrictions on Public Campaigning

The notice explicitly states that no public meetings, processions, or gatherings connected to the elections are allowed within the 48-hour window. It further emphasizes that political leaders and candidates must not attend, organize, or address any such events.

Ban on Political Advertisements

The guidelines also impose a ban on political advertisements across all platforms, including electronic media such as television, radio, cable channels, websites, and social media. The use of projectors or live media for political promotions is similarly restricted during this period.

Media Engagement Prohibited

Additionally, the directive prohibits political leaders, star campaigners, and candidates from engaging with the media during the restricted period. Press conferences, interviews, or any public commentary on election matters are strictly disallowed.

The notice urges political parties to ensure that their leaders and candidates are fully aware of these restrictions to maintain a fair and unbiased election process.

Final Day of Campaigning

Monday marked the final day for election campaigning, with the Delhi Assembly elections scheduled for Wednesday. The results of the polls will be announced on February 8, 2025.

These measures are part of the Election Commission’s broader efforts to uphold the integrity of the electoral process and ensure a level playing field for all political parties.
