New Delhi (National Times): A recent report from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has shed light on the socio-economic and political consequences of illegal immigration in Delhi-NCR, ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections. Titled Illegal Immigrants to Delhi: Analysing Socio-economic and Political Consequences, the 114-page report examines the impact of migration from Bangladesh and Myanmar, citing significant disruptions to Delhi’s economy, demographic changes, and social tensions.
Key Findings of the Report
Demographic Shifts
The report identifies a “notable increase in the Muslim population” due to the influx of undocumented migrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar, fundamentally altering Delhi’s socio-political landscape.
Economic and Resource Strain
Illegal immigration has reportedly disrupted Delhi’s economy by straining resources, increasing population density, and burdening public infrastructure such as transportation systems. Migrant settlements, often overcrowded and unsanitary, contribute to public health risks, including the spread of infectious diseases.
Environmental and Criminal Concerns
The environmental impact of unregulated migrant settlements has been highlighted, with issues like improper waste disposal exacerbating pollution and public health hazards. Furthermore, the report notes that criminal networks have exploited vulnerable migrants for activities such as trafficking and smuggling, thereby strengthening illicit operations in the region.
Political Implications
The report raises concerns about political patronage enabling illegal immigration, including alleged facilitation of voter registration for undocumented migrants, which it warns could undermine democratic processes.
Policy Gaps
The JNU report attributes the ongoing challenges to a lack of comprehensive immigration policies in India, ineffective border control along the India-Bangladesh border, and inadequate cooperation from neighboring countries in addressing illegal migration.
Geopolitical and Social Implications
The report also emphasizes the geopolitical repercussions of illegal immigration, including its effect on India’s relations with neighboring countries like Bangladesh and Myanmar. It underscores the need for collaborative efforts to address cross-border migration while acknowledging that undocumented migrants often face discrimination and hostility, further complicating their integration into Delhi’s social fabric.
Political Reactions
BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in response to the report, accusing the party of providing political patronage to undocumented migrants.
“This report clearly outlines a demographic shift due to illegal migration from Bangladesh and Myanmar. It also highlights the role of political parties, like AAP, in facilitating fake voter registrations for these migrants,” Patra said.
On the other hand, AAP spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar redirected accountability towards the central government. Kakkar held Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri responsible for the settlement of Rohingyas in India, stating that managing and addressing this issue falls under their jurisdiction.
