Temperature Drop in North India Due to Western Disturbance: IMD Reports

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Thursday that a western disturbance over North Pakistan and its associated trough has caused a notable drop in temperatures across North India. This weather system is gradually moving eastward, influencing regional weather patterns.

IMD scientist Soma Roy explained, “A western disturbance currently over North Pakistan, along with its associated trough, is moving eastward. As a result of this system, we experienced significant rainfall yesterday, leading to a sharp decline in temperatures across North West India. For example, Delhi’s temperature has dropped by 2.8 degrees, with Safdarjung at 8.2 degrees and Palam at 9.5 degrees below normal.”

The IMD indicated that while temperatures have fallen, they are not expected to decrease significantly further. “Going forward, we anticipate that while there may be a slight drop of one or two degrees across North India, it will not be substantial. We expect temperatures to begin rising by tomorrow morning, with increases of two to three degrees likely in North West India,” she added.

Looking ahead, a new western disturbance is expected to impact the North Western Himalayas starting January 8, bringing potential snowfall from January 8 to 13. “This upcoming western disturbance will affect the North Western Himalayas, and we anticipate continued snowfall activity during that period. The current disturbance will also impact Arunachal Pradesh and North East Assam later today, leading to increased thunderstorm activity,” Roy noted.

The IMD clarified that other regions of the country will not experience significant weather changes. “In the rest of the country, rainfall will not be affected, except in the Western Himalayan region starting January 8. The minimum temperatures may drop slightly, but will likely rise again over the next few days. This trend will also be seen in Delhi, where temperatures are expected to gradually increase. Meanwhile, maximum temperatures in Peninsular India and East Central India will remain relatively stable,” she concluded.
